If you know me, you’ll know I get ridiculously excited the minute there’s even the slightest chill in the air.

Whilst most people are mourning the end of summer, I’m secretly counting down the days until I can pull my favourite knitwear back out of the wardrobe. There’s just something about autumn that I absolutely love. Crisp morning walks, cosy coffee dates, pub lunches that somehow turn into all afternoon catch ups and finally being able to wrap up in a beautiful jumper again.

But for years, despite spending over 17 years working in fashion, I found myself searching for the same thing every autumn…

The perfect knit.

Not just any jumper. One that felt soft enough to wear all day, colourful enough to brighten even the greyest morning and timeless enough that I’d still be excited to wear it five years later.

It sounds simple, doesn’t it?

But it turned out to be surprisingly difficult.

Every autumn I’d head to the shops hoping this would be the year I’d find the one. Instead, I’d be faced with rails of beige, grey and black, or trend-led styles that looked great for five minutes but didn’t really feel like me.

And that’s when I realised something.

I wasn’t looking for more knitwear.

I was looking for knitwear that made me feel something.

What Makes The Perfect Autumn Knit?

Ada Knitted Vest - Cara & The Sky

The older I’ve got, the more I’ve realised that the best clothes aren’t usually the trendiest ones.

They’re the pieces that quietly become part of your life.

The cardigan that’s always hanging over the back of the kitchen chair because you’ve worn it three days in a row. The jumper you instinctively pack first for every weekend away because it goes with everything. The knit you reach for on a Monday morning because you know it’ll make you feel good, even if you’re running late.

For me, the perfect autumn knit has to tick quite a few boxes.

It has to feel wonderfully soft because life’s far too short for itchy jumpers. It needs to have a relaxed fit that’s comfortable enough to wear all day but still makes you feel put together. It needs to work just as well with jeans as it does layered over a dress, because I want clothes that fit around my life rather than the other way around.

Most importantly though, it has to make me smile.

I’ve never believed we should stop wearing colour just because summer’s over. Autumn is one of the most beautiful, colourful seasons of the year, so why should our wardrobes suddenly become boring?

Why I Started Designing My Own Knitwear

That question is actually one of the biggest reasons Cara & The Sky exists today.

Before launching my little brand back in 2019, I spent years working as a fashion buyer. I loved my job, but I became increasingly frustrated that everything started to look the same. I kept searching for knitwear that felt joyful, colourful and timeless, but I could never quite find everything I was looking for in one place.

So I decided to create it myself.

Every Cara & The Sky knit starts life in my sketchbook before going through months of sampling, tweaking and refining. I obsess over everything from the colours and stitch patterns to the shape of the sleeves and the softness of the yarn because I genuinely want these pieces to become the jumpers you reach for year after year.

Every style is then knitted here in Britain in small batches using beautifully soft vegan-friendly yarn. Making in small quantities means we can focus on creating something really special instead of simply producing more for the sake of it.

I’d always rather design one jumper you’ll wear a hundred times than ten you’ll only wear once.

Meet Lucky & Brigit

This season, there are two styles that I think perfectly capture everything Cara & The Sky is about.

Lucky Flower Checkerboard Jumper - Cara & The Sky

Lucky is for those days when you want your jumper to do all the talking. I wanted to design a bold checkerboard knit that still felt effortless to wear, and somehow Lucky manages to do exactly that. Throw her on with your favourite jeans and trainers for a coffee date, pair her with leather-look trousers for dinner or layer her over a dress as the weather gets colder. She’s colourful, cosy and guaranteed to brighten even the greyest autumn day.

Brigit Chunky Knit Cardigan - Blush - Cara & The Sky

Brigit, on the other hand, is the cardigan you’ll wonder how you ever lived without. Every wardrobe needs that one cardigan you can throw over absolutely everything, and that’s exactly what Brigit was designed to be. Whether you’re heading to work, the school run, Sunday lunch with family or a weekend away, she’s one of those pieces that instantly makes an outfit feel finished while still being wonderfully comfortable.

Still Loved, Season After Season

One of the nicest things about designing timeless knitwear rather than trend-led collections is seeing styles come back year after year because people genuinely love wearing them.

Rhiannon has become one of our signature jumpers and for good reason. Her colourful stripes and relaxed fit have made her a favourite with so many of our Skybabes, proving that colourful knitwear can still become the hardest working piece in your wardrobe.

Gemma has quietly become one of those cardigans customers tell me they practically live in. She’s colourful enough to brighten an outfit but easy enough to wear every single day, which is exactly how I hoped she’d be worn when I designed her.

And then there’s Marissa. With her beautifully textured bubble stitch design, she’s become one of the most recognisable knits we’ve ever made. Every time I see someone wearing her, it reminds me why I fell in love with designing knitwear in the first place.

Why British-Made Knitwear Matters

People often ask why I continue making all my knitwear here in Britain when it would undoubtedly be easier to produce elsewhere.

The answer is simple.

I care about every single jumper that leaves our warehouse.

Working closely with British factories allows me to be involved throughout the whole process, from the very first sample through to the finished knit. It also means we’re producing in small batches rather than creating thousands of garments that may never find a home.

I genuinely believe buying fewer, better pieces is one of the best investments you can make in your wardrobe, and knowing these jumpers have been thoughtfully designed and beautifully made here in Britain makes them feel even more special to me.

Which Autumn Knit Is Right For You?

If you’re looking for one statement jumper that instantly lifts your outfit, I’d choose Lucky.

If your wardrobe revolves around cardigans, I honestly think Brigit will become one of the hardest-working pieces you own.

If you love colourful stripes, Rhiannon is a Cara & The Sky classic for a reason. If you’re searching for an everyday cardigan you’ll wear on repeat, Gemma won’t let you down. And if beautiful texture is your thing, I have a feeling you’ll completely fall in love with Marissa.

Whichever one catches your eye, I hope it becomes one of those pieces you look forward to wearing every autumn.

Final Thoughts

When I started Cara & The Sky, I wasn’t trying to create just another knitwear brand.

I wanted to create the colourful knitwear I’d spent years searching for myself. Knitwear that makes getting dressed feel joyful again. Knitwear that feels timeless rather than trend-led. Knitwear that’s beautifully made, easy to wear and designed to help you feel like yourself.

Because at the end of the day, that’s never really been the goal.

The goal has always been to help you open your wardrobe, put on a jumper you absolutely love and head out the door feeling like the very best version of you.

And if that’s what one colourful autumn knit can do, I’d say it’s doing exactly what it was designed for 💖
