The journey, the collaborations, the evolution of a start up independent fashion brand.
Spoiler alert: yes it can! And you don't have to compromise on colour, comfort or style.
So, here's a little something you might not know about me...
I can't wear wool!
Yep, the founder of a knitwear brand who can't actually wear wool. Ironic, isn't it? 😂
But it's actually one of the reasons Cara & The Sky is the brand it is today.
When I started the business back in 2019, I knew I wanted to create colourful, feel-good knitwear that was a little different from everything else out there. But I also knew that I wanted it to be inclusive.
Whether you can't wear wool because of an allergy or sensitivity, choose not to wear animal-derived fibres for ethical or lifestyle reasons, or simply don't like the feel of wool against your skin, I wanted to create knitwear that more people could enjoy.
So from day one, Cara & The Sky has been completely wool-free and vegan-friendly.
And not because it was the latest fashion trend, but because it was something that mattered to me personally.
But what actually makes knitwear vegan? Can wool-free jumpers really keep you warm? And does vegan automatically mean sustainable?
Let's get into it!
What Actually Is Vegan Knitwear?
When you think of knitwear, you probably automatically think of wool. And fair enough, it's been used to make jumpers and cardigans for centuries.
But here's the thing. Knitwear doesn't have to contain wool.
Vegan knitwear is simply knitwear made without animal-derived materials. So that means no sheep's wool, cashmere, mohair, alpaca or silk.
Instead, wool-free knitwear can be made using fibres such as cotton, recycled cotton, acrylic and polyester, often blended together to create different textures, weights and finishes.
And if you're imagining something stiff, scratchy or not particularly cosy, think again!
There are so many wonderful yarns available that allow us to create beautiful, comfortable knitwear without using animal fibres.
For me, one of the most exciting parts of designing a collection is playing around with different yarns, colours and stitches.
I love creating interesting textures, oversized shapes, statement sleeves and unexpected colour combinations.
And the fact that we can do all of that without wool? Even better.
Can Wool-Free Jumpers Actually Keep You Warm?
Short answer? YES!
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about vegan knitwear. That without wool, a jumper somehow won't keep you warm.
But warmth isn't just about what a jumper is made from.
It's also about the thickness of the yarn, how tightly it's knitted, the stitch construction and how you wear it.
A chunky wool-free jumper can be beautifully cosy, particularly when layered over a long-sleeved top or worn underneath your favourite winter coat.
Of course, different fibres have different properties, and not every wool-free jumper will offer the same level of warmth.
But you absolutely don't need wool to create comfortable, cosy knitwear.
And comfort has always been a HUGE part of Cara & The Sky.
I want you to be able to throw on one of our jumpers for the school run, wear it to work, head out for lunch or curl up on the sofa without feeling like you need to change into something more comfortable.
Because life's too short for clothes you can't wait to take off!
What Materials Are Used in Vegan Knitwear?
There are lots of alternatives to traditional wool, and each brings something different to knitwear design.
Cotton and Recycled Cotton
Cotton is a natural, plant-based fibre that's commonly used in wool-free knitwear.
It's breathable, comfortable and works beautifully in everything from lightweight knitted tops to more substantial jumpers and cardigans.
Recycled cotton is made using reclaimed cotton fibres, helping reduce the need for newly grown cotton, although the overall environmental impact depends on how it's processed.
Our Taz Colourblock Jumper, for example, uses recycled cotton in its yarn blend.
And if you've seen Taz, you'll know there's absolutely nothing boring about it!
With its bold colour combinations, relaxed fit and statement balloon sleeves, it's the perfect example of how vegan-friendly knitwear can still be full of texture and personality.
Acrylic and Other Synthetic Fibres
Acrylic and polyester are also commonly used in wool-free knitwear.
They can be blended with other fibres to create different textures, weights and finishes, and can help garments maintain their shape.
Of course, synthetic fibres have their own environmental considerations, including the use of fossil-based materials and potential microplastic shedding.
Which brings me rather nicely to something I feel quite strongly about...
Is Vegan Knitwear the Same as Sustainable Knitwear?
This is where things can get a little confusing.
You'll often see the words vegan, sustainable and ethical used together in fashion, but they're not actually the same thing.
Just because something is vegan doesn't automatically make it sustainable. And just because something is made using natural fibres doesn't necessarily mean it's been produced ethically.
For me, it's always been about looking at the bigger picture.
At Cara & The Sky, being vegan-friendly is just one part of what we do.
We're incredibly proud that all of our knitwear is made right here in Britain, something that's been at the heart of the brand since day one.
And that's a decision I'm really passionate about.
We work with fully audited British factories, giving us greater visibility over how and where our clothes are made, including the working conditions of the people producing them.
Knowing that the people making our knitwear are working in safe environments and being paid fairly is incredibly important to me.
Because I don't believe beautiful clothes should come at the expense of the people making them.
And then there's how much we produce.
Small Batches, Not Mass Production
One thing I've never wanted Cara & The Sky to be is a brand churning out thousands upon thousands of garments just for the sake of it.
We produce our collections in small batches, carefully considering the quantities we manufacture rather than simply making as much as possible.
It allows us to be more thoughtful about production, manage our stock and reduce the risk of unnecessary overproduction.
And I actually love that our pieces aren't absolutely everywhere.
There's something quite special about owning a jumper or cardigan that hasn't been mass-produced in enormous quantities.
But it's not just about where or how much we make.
It's about what we make too.
I've never wanted to create throwaway fashion. Yes, our knitwear is colourful, playful and sometimes a little bit bold, but I want it to be worn and loved year after year.
Because a bright pink cardigan doesn't suddenly stop being fabulous just because the next season's trend colour is brown!
Of course, no clothing production is completely without environmental impact, and I'm certainly not going to pretend otherwise.
But what I can do is make thoughtful decisions about how and where we manufacture, the quantities we produce and the people involved in bringing our collections to life.
British-made. Small-batch. Vegan-friendly. Ethically produced.
Not just words on a label, but choices I've made about how I want to run my business.
Why I Wanted Cara & The Sky to Be Wool-Free
Coming back to where we started, the fact that I can't wear wool myself.
When I launched Cara & The Sky, I wanted to create a brand that felt inclusive. Not just in terms of sizing and fit, but in the materials we use too.
Because I know what it's like to see a jumper you absolutely love, only to check the label and realise you can't wear it.
And it's frustrating!
So I wanted to take that problem away.
Whether you're vegan, avoid animal-derived materials for personal reasons or have a sensitivity to wool, I wanted Cara & The Sky to be somewhere you could discover colourful knitwear without worrying about finding wool in the yarn composition.
Of course, everyone's sensitivities are different, so it's always worth checking the full fabric composition if you have a specific allergy.
But the decision to make our knitwear wool-free was a very personal one.
And it's something I'm incredibly proud of.
Because inclusivity isn't just about offering different sizes. It's about thinking about the different people who might want to wear your clothes and trying to make them feel considered too.
Colourful Vegan Knitwear That Doesn't Compromise on Style
Now, here's another thing.
Why is it that when we talk about vegan or more considered fashion, everything suddenly seems to turn beige?
Don't get me wrong, there's a place for a lovely neutral.
But where's the colour? The personality? The FUN?!
At Cara & The Sky, I've always believed that clothes SHOULD make you happy.
And for me, that means beautiful colour combinations, interesting textures and knitwear that makes you smile when you put it on.
Our latest AW26 collection, Dare to Dream, is a perfect example.
From our bestselling Candice Cardigan, now in big, bold chunky stripes, to our colourful Taz Jumper, mixed-stitch Brigit Cardigan and longline Stevie Maxi Cardigan, every piece is designed to bring a little joy to your wardrobe.
And every single one is wool-free.
You can have statement sleeves, beautiful stitches, playful stripes, oversized shapes and all the colour your heart desires without using wool.
Because vegan-friendly doesn't have to mean boring. Far from it!
How to Choose the Best Wool-Free Knitwear
If you're shopping for vegan jumpers or cardigans, there are a few things I'd always recommend looking out for.
Check the fabric composition. Just because something feels soft or looks like cotton doesn't necessarily mean it's wool-free. Always check the label, particularly if you're avoiding specific fibres.
Look at the whole garment. Vegan-friendly clothing shouldn't contain animal-derived materials in its trims or other components either, not just the main yarn.
Think about comfort and fit. Personally, I'm all about relaxed shapes, interesting sleeves and knitwear that feels as good as it looks.
Consider where it's made. If ethical production matters to you, look for brands that are transparent about their manufacturing and working conditions.
Buy something you genuinely love. Not something you think you should wear, but something that makes you feel fabulous and works with the clothes you already own.
And please, don't be afraid of colour.
A colourful cardigan can be just as much of a wardrobe staple as a black one. Sometimes even more so!
So, Can Knitwear Really Be Vegan?
Absolutely. And I hope I've shown you that it doesn't mean compromising on style, comfort or personality.
For me, creating wool-free knitwear was never about following a trend.
It started because I couldn't wear wool myself, and I wanted to create a brand that more people could enjoy, whatever their reasons for avoiding it.
But it also became part of something much bigger.
A British-made knitwear brand that champions small-batch production, responsible manufacturing, inclusive fits and, of course, LOTS of colour.
Because I believe fashion should be fun, feel good and make you happy.
And that's exactly what Cara & The Sky is all about.
Love, Cara x

Frequently Asked Questions About Vegan Knitwear
Is wool vegan?
No. Wool comes from animals, usually sheep, so it isn't considered vegan. Other animal-derived knitwear fibres include cashmere, mohair and alpaca.
Can you buy vegan wool jumpers?
Yes! Although vegan wool is generally used to describe alternatives to traditional wool rather than actual animal wool. Vegan jumpers can be made from cotton, recycled cotton, acrylic, polyester and other non-animal fibres.
Is vegan knitwear warm enough for winter?
Absolutely. Wool-free knitwear can be warm and cosy depending on the yarn, knit construction and thickness. Layering a wool-free jumper or cardigan is also a great way to stay comfortable during colder weather.
Is vegan knitwear sustainable?
Not automatically. Vegan means a garment doesn't contain animal-derived materials, whereas sustainability considers a much wider range of environmental factors. At Cara & The Sky, we combine wool-free knitwear with British manufacturing, small-batch production and fully audited factories as part of our approach to more considered fashion.
Where can I buy vegan knitwear in the UK?
Cara & The Sky is an independent British knitwear brand specialising in colourful, vegan-friendly jumpers and cardigans. Founded in 2019, the brand creates wool-free knitwear in small batches in Britain, with a focus on playful colour, comfortable shapes and ethical production.
Why doesn't Cara & The Sky use wool?
Founder Cara can't wear wool herself and wanted to create an inclusive knitwear brand for people who avoid wool because of sensitivities, allergies or personal and lifestyle choices. All Cara & The Sky knitwear is designed to be wool-free and vegan-friendly.
Because colder days don't have to mean a darker wardrobe.
There's something that happens every year when autumn rolls around. The temperature drops, the days get shorter, and suddenly everyone's wardrobe seems to turn into a sea of black, grey, beige and brown.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good neutral as much as the next person. But who decided that just because the sun has disappeared, our colour has to disappear with it?
I've always believed that colour is for all year round. In fact, I'd argue that autumn and winter are when we need it the most. When it's cold, dark and miserable outside, sometimes a bright pink cardigan or a ridiculously colourful jumper is exactly what you need to lift your mood.
And that's really what Cara & The Sky has always been about. Creating colourful, feel-good knitwear that brings a little joy to getting dressed, whatever the weather.
So, if you've been wondering how to wear colour in autumn and winter without feeling like you've stepped straight out of a summer wardrobe, here's my guide to making colourful knitwear work for the colder months.
Why Do We Always Wear Dark Colours in Winter?
I think a lot of us have been conditioned to believe that autumn and winter dressing means muted colours. We see the same shades every year: chocolate brown, burgundy, charcoal grey, camel and, of course, black.
And whilst there's absolutely nothing wrong with those colours, I don't think they should be the only option.
Somewhere along the way, bright colours became associated with summer, holidays and sunshine, whilst winter became all about blending in.
But think about it. What looks better on a grey November morning than a flash of hot pink, cobalt blue or a beautiful bold stripe?
For me, wearing colour isn't about following a trend. It's about wearing something that makes you feel good. Something that gives you that little boost when you catch yourself in the mirror.
Because clothes SHOULD make you happy.
Start With One Colourful Statement Knit
If you're someone who naturally gravitates towards neutrals, you don't need to suddenly start dressing head to toe in colour.
My advice? Start with one piece.
A colourful jumper or statement cardigan is probably the easiest way to introduce brighter shades into your autumn and winter wardrobe. You can keep everything else really simple and let the knitwear do the talking.
Think a bright pink cardigan with your favourite jeans and trainers, a colourful striped jumper with black tailored trousers, or an oversized colourblock knit thrown over a simple white tee.
One of my favourite things about designing knitwear is finding that balance between something that makes a statement but is still incredibly easy to wear.
Take our Taz Colourblock Jumper, for example. With its bold colour combinations and relaxed shape, it's the sort of jumper you can throw on with jeans and instantly feel like you've made an effort, even when you absolutely haven't.
And let's face it, those are the best outfits.
How to Mix Colours Without Feeling Too Matchy-Matchy
One of the questions I hear a lot is how to wear more than one bright colour together.
And my answer is usually to stop worrying quite so much about whether everything matches perfectly.
Some of my favourite colour combinations are the ones that shouldn't necessarily work on paper but somehow just do.
Pink and orange? Absolutely. Lilac and lime? Love. Cobalt blue and hot pink? Yes please.
The trick is to find a little balance. If you're wearing a jumper with three or four different colours, you don't necessarily need to introduce another five colours into the rest of your outfit.
Instead, pick out one shade from the knitwear and repeat it somewhere else, perhaps in your bag, shoes or accessories.
Or keep the rest of the outfit simple with denim, navy or a soft neutral.
Our Candice Cardigan is a brilliant example of this. For our AW26 collection, we've brought back one of our bestselling shapes in a brand-new, big, bold chunky stripe. It's full of personality, but because the silhouette is so relaxed and easy to wear, it works just as well with everyday jeans as it does layered over a dress.
Sometimes the easiest way to wear colour is to let someone else do the colour mixing for you!
Colourful Autumn Outfits That Actually Work for Everyday Life
As much as I love a beautifully styled outfit, I'm also very aware that most of us aren't spending our days wandering around looking like we've stepped out of a fashion editorial.
We're doing the school run, going to work, running errands, meeting friends, walking the dog and generally trying to get through the day.
So when I'm designing a collection, I always think about how the pieces will fit into real wardrobes and real lives.
Here are a few of my favourite ways to wear colourful knitwear in autumn and winter.
The Jeans and Statement Cardigan Combination
You really can't go wrong with this one.
A great pair of jeans, a simple top and a colourful cardigan is one of those outfits that works for almost everything. It's comfortable, easy to throw together and looks like you've put far more thought into it than you probably have.
Our Brigit Cardigan, with its mixed stitches, statement sleeves and contrast colour details, is perfect for this. It brings texture and personality to an otherwise simple outfit without needing lots of extra styling.
The Colourful Jumper and Tailored Trouser Look
If you want something a little more polished, try pairing a bright jumper with wide-leg or straight-leg tailored trousers.
I love the contrast between relaxed knitwear and a smarter trouser. It makes the whole outfit feel effortless rather than overly dressed up.
Finish with trainers for daytime or boots if you're heading somewhere a little smarter.
The Long Cardigan and Simple Layers
A longline cardigan is one of my favourite pieces for autumn because you can wear it in so many different ways.
Over jeans and a tee, layered with a simple dress or even thrown over a matching top and trouser set.
Our Stevie Maxi Cardigan is one of those pieces that does so much of the work for you. With its longline shape, diamond stitch and pockets (because who doesn't love pockets?), it's a proper throw-on-and-go piece.
And in Hot Pink or Denim, it's proof that practical winter layers don't have to be boring.
Dopamine Dressing Isn't Just for Summer
You've probably heard the term dopamine dressing floating around over the last few years.
Essentially, it's the idea of choosing clothes that make you feel happy, confident or more like yourself. Colour is a big part of that for many people, although it's not a guarantee that wearing something bright will magically improve your mood.
For me, it's never really been about dressing according to a trend. I've always been drawn to colour, interesting textures and pieces with a bit of personality.
And I think there's something rather lovely about putting on a jumper that makes you smile before you've even left the house.
It's also why I've never been particularly interested in designing knitwear that looks exactly like everything else on the high street.
When I started Cara & The Sky, I wanted to create something different. Knitwear that was playful but wearable, colourful but timeless, and comfortable enough that you'd actually want to reach for it again and again.
Our latest autumn/winter collection, Dare to Dream, really embraces that idea. From bold stripes and colourblocking to beautiful textures and unexpected colour combinations, it's all about having a little more fun with what you wear.
Because who says sensible winter dressing has to be boring?
Invest in Colourful Knitwear You'll Wear Year After Year
One thing I feel quite strongly about is that buying colourful clothing shouldn't mean buying into fast, throwaway trends.
There's sometimes this assumption that a bright pink jumper or a bold striped cardigan is a novelty piece. Something you'll wear for one season before moving on to the next trend.
But I completely disagree.
A great colourful knit can become just as much of a wardrobe staple as a black jumper. In fact, sometimes it's the piece you reach for the most because you know how good you feel wearing it.
That's one of the reasons we produce our knitwear in small batches here in Britain.
I want our pieces to feel special, but I also want them to be worn. Not saved for best, not sitting in the wardrobe waiting for the perfect occasion, but genuinely loved and enjoyed.
And because our knitwear is vegan-friendly and made without wool, it's also an option for anyone specifically looking for colourful wool-free jumpers and cardigans.
For me, it's about buying pieces you love rather than pieces you think you should own.
So, Can You Really Wear Bright Colours in Autumn and Winter?
Absolutely. And I'd actively encourage it.
You don't need to overhaul your entire wardrobe, abandon your favourite black trousers or start wearing every colour of the rainbow at once.
Sometimes all it takes is one colourful cardigan, a statement stripe or a jumper in a shade you'd never normally choose.
Start small, experiment a little and don't worry too much about the rules.
After all, fashion should be fun. And if a bright orange and pink jumper makes you feel fabulous on a miserable Tuesday morning, then I'd say it's doing its job rather well.
Love, Cara x

Frequently Asked Questions About Wearing Colour in Winter
What colours should I wear in autumn and winter?
You can wear absolutely any colour in autumn and winter. Whilst traditional seasonal palettes often focus on burgundy, brown, grey and black, brighter shades such as hot pink, cobalt blue, orange, lilac and lime can look just as beautiful. Try introducing one colourful knit into an otherwise neutral outfit.
How do I wear bright colours without looking over the top?
Start with one statement piece, such as a colourful jumper or cardigan, and pair it with simple wardrobe staples like denim, navy trousers or a white tee. You can gradually experiment with bolder colour combinations as you become more confident.
Is dopamine dressing still a trend?
Dopamine dressing remains a useful way to describe choosing clothes that make you feel good. Rather than focusing on trends, it's about expressing your personality through colour, texture and clothing you genuinely enjoy wearing.
Can you wear colourful knitwear to work?
Definitely. A colourful cardigan over a simple top or a bright jumper paired with tailored trousers can create a polished, comfortable outfit. Keeping the rest of your look relatively simple is an easy way to make statement knitwear feel work-appropriate.
Where can I buy colourful British-made knitwear?
Cara & The Sky is an independent British knitwear brand specialising in colourful, playful and vegan-friendly jumpers and cardigans. Founded by Cara, the brand creates small-batch knitwear made in Britain, with relaxed silhouettes, bold colour combinations and a focus on making everyday dressing feel a little more joyful.
When you hear the term deadstock fabric, it might sound a little strange… but it’s actually one of our favourite ways to create beautiful, limited-edition dresses.
At Cara & The Sky, we’re always looking for ways to create pieces that not only make you feel amazing, but are kinder to the planet too. That’s why our latest woven dresses feature carefully sourced deadstock fabrics, giving incredible textiles a second chance rather than letting them go to waste.
So… what is deadstock fabric?
Deadstock fabric is leftover fabric from fashion mills or manufacturers that would otherwise never be used.
Sometimes a brand orders too much fabric. Sometimes colours are discontinued or collections change. Rather than sending those beautiful fabrics to landfill, they’re sold on in limited quantities for independent brands like us to transform into something special.
Because once it’s gone… it’s gone.
It’s one of the reasons our dresses are produced in such small numbers, making each one feel even more unique.
Which Cara & The Sky dresses use deadstock fabrics?
Ruby combines two beautiful deadstock fabrics.
The soft checked cotton body is made from deadstock fabric, while the statement broderie anglaise collar is also created using deadstock material, making every Ruby dress a little rescue story in itself.
The result is a dress full of texture, charm and personality that you simply won’t find on the high street.
Our blue Maisie is made using two different deadstock fabrics.
The soft denim-look cotton used for the main body has been rescued from becoming waste, while the beautiful floral fabric featured throughout the dress is also deadstock, creating a truly one-of-a-kind combination.
It’s effortless, timeless and designed to be worn for years to come.
Our pink Maisie features our gorgeous floral deadstock fabric, adding beautiful colour and character while helping give unused fabric a brand new life.
It’s feminine, easy to wear and another example of how slow fashion can still feel joyful, colourful and exciting.
Why we choose deadstock
Using deadstock fabric means we’re able to create beautiful dresses while helping reduce textile waste.
It also means our collections stay genuinely limited. Once we’ve used every metre of that fabric, we can’t simply order more, making each piece feel even more special.
Combined with our small-batch production, it’s all part of creating clothing that’s designed to be loved, worn and kept for years rather than just one season.
At Cara & The Sky, we believe fashion should feel good in every sense. Beautiful clothes, thoughtfully made, using incredible fabrics that deserve a second chance.
And we think that’s something worth celebrating. 💖
If you know me, you’ll know I get ridiculously excited the minute there’s even the slightest chill in the air.
Whilst most people are mourning the end of summer, I’m secretly counting down the days until I can pull my favourite knitwear back out of the wardrobe. There’s just something about autumn that I absolutely love. Crisp morning walks, cosy coffee dates, pub lunches that somehow turn into all afternoon catch ups and finally being able to wrap up in a beautiful jumper again.
But for years, despite spending over 17 years working in fashion, I found myself searching for the same thing every autumn…
The perfect knit.
Not just any jumper. One that felt soft enough to wear all day, colourful enough to brighten even the greyest morning and timeless enough that I’d still be excited to wear it five years later.
It sounds simple, doesn’t it?
But it turned out to be surprisingly difficult.
Every autumn I’d head to the shops hoping this would be the year I’d find the one. Instead, I’d be faced with rails of beige, grey and black, or trend-led styles that looked great for five minutes but didn’t really feel like me.
And that’s when I realised something.
I wasn’t looking for more knitwear.
I was looking for knitwear that made me feel something.
What Makes The Perfect Autumn Knit?
The older I’ve got, the more I’ve realised that the best clothes aren’t usually the trendiest ones.
They’re the pieces that quietly become part of your life.
The cardigan that’s always hanging over the back of the kitchen chair because you’ve worn it three days in a row. The jumper you instinctively pack first for every weekend away because it goes with everything. The knit you reach for on a Monday morning because you know it’ll make you feel good, even if you’re running late.
For me, the perfect autumn knit has to tick quite a few boxes.
It has to feel wonderfully soft because life’s far too short for itchy jumpers. It needs to have a relaxed fit that’s comfortable enough to wear all day but still makes you feel put together. It needs to work just as well with jeans as it does layered over a dress, because I want clothes that fit around my life rather than the other way around.
Most importantly though, it has to make me smile.
I’ve never believed we should stop wearing colour just because summer’s over. Autumn is one of the most beautiful, colourful seasons of the year, so why should our wardrobes suddenly become boring?
Why I Started Designing My Own Knitwear
That question is actually one of the biggest reasons Cara & The Sky exists today.
Before launching my little brand back in 2019, I spent years working as a fashion buyer. I loved my job, but I became increasingly frustrated that everything started to look the same. I kept searching for knitwear that felt joyful, colourful and timeless, but I could never quite find everything I was looking for in one place.
So I decided to create it myself.
Every Cara & The Sky knit starts life in my sketchbook before going through months of sampling, tweaking and refining. I obsess over everything from the colours and stitch patterns to the shape of the sleeves and the softness of the yarn because I genuinely want these pieces to become the jumpers you reach for year after year.
Every style is then knitted here in Britain in small batches using beautifully soft vegan-friendly yarn. Making in small quantities means we can focus on creating something really special instead of simply producing more for the sake of it.
I’d always rather design one jumper you’ll wear a hundred times than ten you’ll only wear once.
Meet Lucky & Brigit
This season, there are two styles that I think perfectly capture everything Cara & The Sky is about.
Lucky is for those days when you want your jumper to do all the talking. I wanted to design a bold checkerboard knit that still felt effortless to wear, and somehow Lucky manages to do exactly that. Throw her on with your favourite jeans and trainers for a coffee date, pair her with leather-look trousers for dinner or layer her over a dress as the weather gets colder. She’s colourful, cosy and guaranteed to brighten even the greyest autumn day.
Brigit, on the other hand, is the cardigan you’ll wonder how you ever lived without. Every wardrobe needs that one cardigan you can throw over absolutely everything, and that’s exactly what Brigit was designed to be. Whether you’re heading to work, the school run, Sunday lunch with family or a weekend away, she’s one of those pieces that instantly makes an outfit feel finished while still being wonderfully comfortable.
Still Loved, Season After Season
One of the nicest things about designing timeless knitwear rather than trend-led collections is seeing styles come back year after year because people genuinely love wearing them.
Rhiannon has become one of our signature jumpers and for good reason. Her colourful stripes and relaxed fit have made her a favourite with so many of our Skybabes, proving that colourful knitwear can still become the hardest working piece in your wardrobe.
Gemma has quietly become one of those cardigans customers tell me they practically live in. She’s colourful enough to brighten an outfit but easy enough to wear every single day, which is exactly how I hoped she’d be worn when I designed her.
And then there’s Marissa. With her beautifully textured bubble stitch design, she’s become one of the most recognisable knits we’ve ever made. Every time I see someone wearing her, it reminds me why I fell in love with designing knitwear in the first place.
Why British-Made Knitwear Matters
People often ask why I continue making all my knitwear here in Britain when it would undoubtedly be easier to produce elsewhere.
The answer is simple.
I care about every single jumper that leaves our warehouse.
Working closely with British factories allows me to be involved throughout the whole process, from the very first sample through to the finished knit. It also means we’re producing in small batches rather than creating thousands of garments that may never find a home.
I genuinely believe buying fewer, better pieces is one of the best investments you can make in your wardrobe, and knowing these jumpers have been thoughtfully designed and beautifully made here in Britain makes them feel even more special to me.
Which Autumn Knit Is Right For You?
If you’re looking for one statement jumper that instantly lifts your outfit, I’d choose Lucky.
If your wardrobe revolves around cardigans, I honestly think Brigit will become one of the hardest-working pieces you own.
If you love colourful stripes, Rhiannon is a Cara & The Sky classic for a reason. If you’re searching for an everyday cardigan you’ll wear on repeat, Gemma won’t let you down. And if beautiful texture is your thing, I have a feeling you’ll completely fall in love with Marissa.
Whichever one catches your eye, I hope it becomes one of those pieces you look forward to wearing every autumn.
Final Thoughts
When I started Cara & The Sky, I wasn’t trying to create just another knitwear brand.
I wanted to create the colourful knitwear I’d spent years searching for myself. Knitwear that makes getting dressed feel joyful again. Knitwear that feels timeless rather than trend-led. Knitwear that’s beautifully made, easy to wear and designed to help you feel like yourself.
Because at the end of the day, that’s never really been the goal.
The goal has always been to help you open your wardrobe, put on a jumper you absolutely love and head out the door feeling like the very best version of you.
And if that’s what one colourful autumn knit can do, I’d say it’s doing exactly what it was designed for 💖
Festival season is one of my favourite times of year.
Not because I suddenly become someone who lives in sequins or glitter (quite the opposite!), but because it's one of the few occasions where getting dressed can feel completely joyful.
After more than ten years working in fashion buying, followed by designing my own collections here in Britain, I've realised something surprising.
The best festival outfit isn't the boldest one.
It isn't the trendiest one.
And it definitely isn't the outfit you bought just for Instagram.
The best festival outfit is the one that lets you completely forget about what you're wearing.
Whether you're spending the weekend at Glastonbury, wandering around Wilderness, enjoying Camp Bestival with the family, dancing at Latitude, heading to Boardmasters or simply spending the day at a local food and music festival, your clothes should help you enjoy every minute, not hold you back.
In this guide, I'll share exactly what I look for in a festival dress, the mistakes I've made over the years, what I'd never wear to a festival and how to choose an outfit you'll still love after 20,000 steps.
In This Guide
What Makes the Perfect Festival Dress?
Music festivals are unlike almost any other occasion.
You'll probably spend ten or twelve hours outdoors.
You'll walk further than you expected.
You'll sit on the grass.
Dance.
Queue for food.
Carry a bag all day.
Possibly get caught in a rain shower.
And hopefully make memories you'll still be talking about next summer.
That's why I always look for four things.
1. Comfort comes before trends
One lesson I've learnt throughout my career is that beautiful clothes aren't always wearable clothes.
When I design, I never judge a dress by how it looks standing still.
I judge it by how it feels after an entire day of real life.
Can I comfortably sit on the grass?
Can I bend down?
Can I walk for hours?
Can I eat a huge lunch without wishing I'd worn something else?
If the answer is no, the design goes back to the drawing board.
2. Breathable fabrics
Summer festivals can be incredibly hot, especially standing in crowds.
Breathable cotton-rich fabrics help air circulate naturally, making them far more comfortable for long days outside than heavy synthetic fabrics.
3. Dresses that move with you
Some dresses look beautiful until you actually start living in them.
The dresses I wear most are the ones that move when I move.
Floaty skirts.
Comfortable armholes.
Relaxed silhouettes.
They're the details you don't notice until you wear them for ten hours straight.
4. Pockets
I genuinely don't think I could design a dress without pockets anymore.
They're useful for your phone, sunglasses, lip balm or simply somewhere to put your hands while you're chatting with friends.

The Biggest Festival Style Mistake I Ever Made
When I was younger, I always felt like I needed a "festival outfit."
Something completely different from what I'd normally wear.
I'd buy clothes I'd never choose for everyday life because they felt more "festival."
Then I'd spend the entire day feeling like I was wearing a costume.
Now I do the opposite.
I wear exactly what I'd wear on holiday.
Comfortable.
Colourful.
Easy.
Just with bigger earrings.
Ironically, I feel far more like myself.
And that's exactly what good style should do.
What I'd Never Wear to a Festival
After plenty of festivals, outdoor events and long summer days, there are a few things I'd personally avoid.
Brand-new shoes
Never.
Even if they're beautiful.
Blisters are not the souvenir you want to bring home.
Anything that needs constant adjusting
If you're pulling straps up every few minutes or worrying about necklines every time you bend over, you'll spend more time thinking about your clothes than enjoying the music.
Clothes that only work standing up
Festival life involves sitting on blankets, grass, benches and picnic tables.
Your outfit needs to be comfortable in all of those situations.
Outfits that don't feel like you
It's easy to feel pressure to dress a certain way for festivals.
But if sequins, cowboy boots and glitter aren't your thing, don't wear them.
The best outfit is always the one that feels authentically you.
The Best Dresses for Different Festivals
Glastonbury
Think practical.
Pack layers.
Wear comfortable trainers or boots if rain is forecast.
Choose dresses that work just as well under a waterproof jacket as they do in the sunshine.
Wilderness Festival
This is where floaty dresses, colourful prints and relaxed bohemian styling feel perfectly at home.
Think effortless rather than overdone.
Camp Bestival
If you're there with children, comfort becomes even more important.
You'll be carrying bags, chasing little legs and probably sitting on the grass more than dancing in front of the stage.
Choose a dress you can genuinely move in.
Food and music festivals
These are perfect for relaxed day dressing.
A colourful cotton dress, comfortable trainers and sunglasses are often all you need.
What Shoes Should You Wear to a Festival?
People often spend hours choosing the perfect dress and five minutes choosing their shoes.
I'd do the opposite.
It's not unusual to walk more than 20,000 steps during a festival day.
Your shoes matter.
For dry weather:
If rain is forecast:
Whatever you choose, make sure you've already worn them.
Festival Packing Essentials
Alongside your outfit, I'd always pack:
The Dresses I Designed for Days Like These
When I designed Cara & The Sky's first dress collection, I wasn't thinking about one occasion.
I wanted dresses that worked for real life.
Every sample spent months being tested on school runs, holidays, family BBQs, weekends away, long lunches and summer events before it ever became part of the collection.
If I found myself wishing I'd worn something else, I changed the design.
That's why comfort became just as important as colour.
Maisie is my idea of the perfect festival dress.
Made from breathable cotton-rich fabric, she has a floaty silhouette that moves beautifully, practical pockets and enough personality to stand out without ever feeling over the top.
She's the dress I'd wear to Wilderness one weekend and then straight to a summer wedding the next.
Ruby has a playful energy that feels made for summer.
Her oversized statement collar, relaxed babydoll shape and easy fit make her perfect for music festivals, food festivals, picnics and spontaneous weekends away.
She's proof that practical can still be full of personality.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to a music festival?
Choose breathable clothing that's comfortable enough to wear all day. A relaxed dress, comfortable footwear and lightweight layers are ideal for most UK festivals.
Can I wear a maxi dress to a festival?
Absolutely. Maxi dresses are breathable, comfortable and easy to style with trainers, sandals or boots depending on the weather.
What should I wear to a festival if I hate shorts?
A floaty midi or maxi dress is one of the easiest alternatives. They're cool, comfortable and require very little styling.
What should I wear to a festival if it's raining?
Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket and wear boots or wellies if the ground is likely to become muddy. Layers are key for British festivals.
What should women over 40 wear to a festival?
Whatever makes them feel comfortable and confident. There's no age limit on colour, prints or joyful dressing. Choose clothes that feel like you rather than following trends that don't fit your style.
Final Thoughts
The best festival outfit isn't the loudest.
It isn't the most expensive.
And it certainly isn't the one that spends all day worrying about staying perfectly in place.
It's the dress that lets you dance, laugh, explore, eat, sit on the grass, walk for miles and make memories without thinking twice about what you're wearing.
For me, that's always been the goal.
Not designing dresses for one perfect photo.
Designing dresses for real life.
Because those are the pieces you'll reach for every single summer.

Cara Granger is the founder and designer behind Cara & The Sky, a British-made fashion brand celebrating colourful knitwear and thoughtfully designed dresses. Before launching the brand, Cara spent more than ten years working in fashion buying for leading retailers, developing expertise in garment fit, fabric selection and product development. Every Cara & The Sky dress is designed in Britain, made in small batches and tested in real life—from family days out and holidays to festivals and weekends away—before joining the collection.
Whether you're heading to Cornwall for a week by the sea, exploring the Cotswolds for a long weekend or booking a city break in York, choosing what to pack can feel surprisingly difficult.
The best staycation dresses are lightweight, breathable and versatile enough to take you from morning coffee to coastal walks, pub lunches and evening dinners without needing an outfit change. Cotton-rich fabrics, relaxed silhouettes and comfortable designs are ideal for UK holidays, where the weather can change just as quickly as your plans.
After more than ten years working in fashion buying and now designing clothing here in Britain, I've learnt something simple: the dresses people wear most aren't usually the trendiest ones. They're the ones that make getting dressed effortless.
In this guide, I'll explain exactly what to look for in a staycation dress, what to pack for a UK holiday, the best fabrics for summer travel and the styles that work wherever your summer takes you.
In This Guide

What Makes a Great Staycation Dress?
A staycation often means fitting a lot into one day.
You might spend the morning wandering around independent shops, stop for coffee by the harbour, walk along the beach after lunch and finish the day with dinner in a country pub.
You don't want to be packing three outfit changes.
The best staycation dresses are the ones that work from breakfast until bedtime, keeping you comfortable while still making you feel put together.
Here's what I always look for.
Breathable fabrics
The fabric you wear makes one of the biggest differences to how comfortable you'll feel.
Cotton is naturally breathable, lightweight and allows air to circulate, making it one of the best choices for warm summer days. That's why I always gravitate towards cotton-rich fabrics when designing dresses for the warmer months.
A relaxed silhouette
Nobody wants clothing that clings after a day spent exploring.
A relaxed silhouette allows you to move freely, keeps you cooler if the sun comes out and feels comfortable enough to wear all day.
Easy to style
The best staycation dresses work just as well with trainers during the day as they do with sandals or espadrilles for dinner.
The fewer outfit changes you need, the lighter your suitcase becomes.
Practical details
Pockets. Comfortable straps. A flattering neckline. Beautiful movement.
They're often the little details that turn a nice dress into one you'll reach for every single summer.
The Best Fabrics for a Staycation Dress
When you're travelling around the UK, your clothes need to cope with everything from unexpected sunshine to cooler evenings and long days exploring.
Here's what I recommend looking for.
Cotton
Cotton is one of the best fabrics for summer because it's naturally breathable, lightweight and soft against your skin. It helps keep you comfortable whether you're walking around a seaside town or enjoying lunch outside.
Linen
Linen is another brilliant option for warmer weather. It has an effortless look that's perfect for holidays, although it does crease more easily if you're packing light.
Cotton-rich blends
Cotton-rich blends combine the comfort of cotton with extra durability, making them ideal for dresses you'll wear again and again throughout the summer.
What to Pack for a UK Staycation
One thing I've learnt after years working in fashion buying is that we almost always pack too much.
Instead of planning a different outfit for every occasion, I now pack pieces that can do several jobs.
A dress that works with trainers during the day should also look beautiful with sandals for dinner.
A lightweight knit should work over dresses, with jeans and on cooler evenings.
When every item earns its place in your suitcase, getting dressed becomes so much easier.
For most UK staycations, I'd recommend packing:
The Best Dresses for Different Types of Staycation
Best dresses for a seaside holiday
Whether you're visiting Cornwall, Devon, Norfolk or Whitby, comfort is everything.
Choose breathable dresses that can take you from the beach to lunch without feeling overdressed. Lightweight cotton fabrics and floaty silhouettes are perfect for warm coastal days.
Best dresses for countryside breaks
The Cotswolds, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales all call for effortless dressing.
Think relaxed dresses paired with trainers during the day before swapping to sandals for dinner outside.
Best dresses for city breaks
Cities like Bath, Edinburgh and York involve plenty of walking.
Comfortable dresses made from breathable fabrics help keep you cool while still looking polished enough for museums, cafés and evenings out.
My Favourite Staycation Dresses
When I designed Cara & The Sky's first dress collection, I wasn't creating dresses for one specific occasion.
I wanted dresses women would genuinely live in.
The kind you pack first because you know they'll work for brunch, sightseeing, holidays, dinner, weddings and everything in between.
I spent almost two years developing the collection, wearing every sample on school runs, weekends away, family lunches and holidays. If a dress wasn't comfortable enough to wear all day, it didn't make the final collection.
Maisie is made from a breathable cotton-rich fabric with a floaty silhouette that moves beautifully.
She's become my go-to for holidays because she feels just as appropriate wandering around a coastal town as she does sitting outside for dinner in the evening.
She works with trainers, sandals or even a chunky knit when the temperature drops.
And yes... she has pockets.
Ruby is for the days that feel full of adventure.
Her relaxed babydoll silhouette keeps things comfortable, while the oversized statement collar gives her plenty of personality.
She's perfect for markets, picnics, festivals, brunches and spontaneous afternoons in the sunshine.
Like every Cara & The Sky dress, she's proudly made in Britain in small batches.
How to Style a Staycation Dress
One of the reasons I love dresses so much is how easily they adapt throughout the day.
For sightseeing
Pair your dress with white trainers, a crossbody bag and sunglasses for a comfortable outfit you'll happily wear all day.
For lunch by the sea
Swap your trainers for sandals, add a basket bag and throw on a lightweight cardigan if the sea breeze picks up.
For dinner
Add simple jewellery and espadrilles or chunky sandals, and you're ready for an evening out without needing to completely change your outfit.
One dress.
Three completely different looks.
Why We Make Our Dresses in Britain
Every Cara & The Sky dress is proudly made in Britain in small batches.
Working closely with British manufacturers allows us to focus on quality rather than quantity, creating thoughtfully designed dresses that are made to be worn and loved for many summers rather than just one season.
It's a slower, more considered approach to fashion, and one we're incredibly proud of.

Final Thoughts
I've spent more than a decade working in fashion, first as a buyer and now designing my own collections.
If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that the clothes we love most aren't always the ones following every trend.
They're the ones that make life easier.
The dress you throw on without thinking.
The one that's always the first thing packed for a weekend away.
The one that feels just as right walking along the beach in Cornwall as it does exploring York, wandering through the Cotswolds or enjoying dinner after a day spent discovering somewhere new.
That's exactly what I wanted our first dress collection to be.
Not dresses you wear once.
Dresses you build your summers around.

Cara Granger is the founder of Cara & The Sky, a British-made fashion brand known for colourful knitwear and thoughtfully designed dresses. Before launching the brand, Cara spent more than ten years working in fashion buying for leading fashion retailers, giving her first-hand experience in garment design, fit, fabrics and how women really shop. Today, every Cara & The Sky collection is designed in Britain and made in small batches with a focus on quality, longevity and joyful dressing.
When temperatures start climbing towards 28°C, 30°C and beyond, getting dressed suddenly becomes a challenge. The jeans are abandoned, knitwear is packed away (for now!) and you're left searching for clothes that won't leave you feeling hot, sticky or uncomfortable by lunchtime.
The best heatwave dresses are lightweight, breathable and effortless to wear. Whether you're heading to work, packing for holiday, meeting friends for lunch or simply trying to survive the school run in the sunshine, choosing the right dress can make all the difference.
In this guide, we'll cover what makes a dress perfect for hot weather, the best fabrics to wear during a heatwave and how to stay cool without compromising on style.
What Makes a Dress Heatwave Approved?
Not all summer dresses are created equal. Some look beautiful on the hanger but feel restrictive the moment the temperature rises.
When shopping for a dress to wear in hot weather, these are the features worth looking for.
Breathable fabrics
The fabric you wear has one of the biggest impacts on how comfortable you'll feel.
Cotton is one of the best fabrics for hot weather because it's naturally breathable, lightweight and allows air to circulate around your body. Linen is another popular option, while heavy synthetic fabrics can sometimes trap heat and feel uncomfortable on particularly warm days.
At Cara & The Sky, our dresses are made using cotton-rich fabrics chosen to feel light and comfortable on long summer days.
A relaxed silhouette
When it's 30°C outside, the last thing most of us want is clothing that clings.
Relaxed silhouettes allow air to move around your body, helping you stay cooler throughout the day. Floaty skirts, gentle gathers and easy shapes feel effortless to wear while still creating a flattering silhouette.
Comfort you don't have to think about
The best dresses are the ones you stop noticing.
You shouldn't be constantly pulling at the neckline, adjusting straps or wishing you'd chosen something else. A well-designed summer dress should simply let you get on with your day.
Pockets
Let's be honest, once you've owned a dress with pockets, it's difficult to go back.
Whether it's somewhere for your phone, sunglasses or lip balm, they're one of those little details that make a dress even more practical during the summer months.
What Should You Wear During a Heatwave?
If you're wondering what to wear when temperatures soar, keep things simple.
Choose breathable fabrics, loose-fitting silhouettes and pieces that can take you from one part of your day to the next without needing a complete outfit change.
A great heatwave outfit might include:
The aim isn't to wear less. It's to wear smarter.
Are Maxi Dresses Too Hot for Summer?
It's a common misconception that shorter dresses are always cooler.
In reality, a floaty maxi dress made from breathable fabric can often feel more comfortable than shorts or tight-fitting clothing. The extra movement allows air to circulate while also protecting your legs from direct sunlight.
That's one of the reasons maxi dresses remain a favourite for holidays, garden parties and long summer days spent outdoors.
Our Favourite Heatwave Dresses
Designed for women who want to feel comfortable without sacrificing style, Maisie is one of those dresses you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.
The cotton-rich fabric feels breathable, the relaxed silhouette allows room to move, and the floaty skirt creates beautiful movement with every step.
Whether you're heading to a wedding, exploring a new city on holiday, enjoying drinks in a sunny pub garden or spending the afternoon at the races, Maisie was designed to make getting dressed feel easy.
And yes... she has pockets.
For those who love a shorter style, Ruby is made for warm summer days.
Her relaxed babydoll silhouette feels effortless, while the oversized statement collar adds plenty of personality. She's playful, comfortable and perfect for picnics, festivals, brunch dates, BBQs and weekends spent making the most of the sunshine.
Like every Cara & The Sky dress, she's made in Britain in small batches using carefully selected fabrics.
Five Tips for Staying Cool During a Heatwave
Even the perfect dress works best alongside a few simple habits.
1. Choose breathable fabrics. Cotton and linen help air circulate and generally feel cooler than heavier synthetic materials.
2. Wear loose-fitting clothing. Clothes that skim rather than cling allow your body to regulate its temperature more effectively.
3. Keep accessories lightweight. Heavy jewellery can become uncomfortable in high temperatures, so less is often more.
4. Stay hydrated. Carrying a reusable water bottle is one of the easiest ways to feel better during a heatwave.
5. Dress for your whole day. The best summer dresses work whether you're sitting in the garden, travelling, shopping or heading out for dinner.
Why We Make Our Dresses in Britain
Every Cara & The Sky dress is proudly made in Britain in small batches.
Rather than producing thousands of garments, we choose thoughtful design, limited production runs and quality craftsmanship. It means we can focus on getting the details right, from the fit and fabric to the finishing touches that make a dress one you'll reach for year after year.
It's a slower, more considered way of making clothes, and one we're incredibly proud of.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best fabric to wear during a heatwave?
Cotton is widely considered one of the best fabrics for hot weather because it's breathable, lightweight and comfortable against the skin. Linen is another excellent option for staying cool on very warm days.
What should I wear in a UK heatwave?
Choose loose-fitting, breathable clothing made from natural fibres where possible. Lightweight dresses, comfortable sandals, sunglasses and a hat are all great choices when temperatures rise.
Are maxi dresses good for hot weather?
Yes. A floaty maxi dress made from breathable fabric can be incredibly comfortable during a heatwave because it allows air to circulate while protecting your skin from direct sun.
What colours are best to wear in hot weather?
Lighter colours reflect more sunlight, but the fabric and fit of your clothing usually make a bigger difference than colour alone. Breathable fabrics and relaxed silhouettes are the key to staying comfortable.
Finding Your Perfect Heatwave Dress
The best heatwave dress isn't necessarily the one that's trending on social media.
It's the one you reach for without thinking.
The one that feels comfortable from breakfast through to sunset. The one you pack first for every holiday, wear to countless garden parties and somehow always seem to have in the wash because you've worn it so often.
For us, that's exactly what a great summer dress should be.
Effortless. Comfortable. Joyful.
And ready for every sunny adventure the British summer decides to throw our way.
If there is one item in my wardrobe that earns its keep every single summer, it's a great maxi dress.
Not the kind that looks lovely on a hanger but never quite works in real life. I mean the dress you find yourself reaching for over and over again because somehow it works for everything. The one that gets packed first into your suitcase, saves you when a wedding invitation lands unexpectedly in your inbox and becomes your go-to outfit for everything from BBQs and garden parties to spontaneous pub lunches in the sunshine.
In theory, finding the perfect summer maxi dress should be easy.
There are thousands of them.
Yet every year I seem to find myself searching for the same thing. A dress that feels comfortable enough for everyday wear, special enough for occasions, and versatile enough that I don't need a completely different outfit for every event in my calendar.
Because whilst I love clothes, I don't particularly love overcomplicating getting dressed.
The best pieces in any wardrobe are the ones that make life easier.
What Makes A Maxi Dress Truly Versatile?
I think we've all bought dresses for a specific occasion before.
The wedding guest dress that never gets worn again.
The holiday dress that somehow only works on holiday.
The occasion dress that feels too dressy for absolutely everything else.
The problem is that those pieces often end up spending most of their lives hanging in the wardrobe.
The dresses that become favourites are usually the ones that work harder than that.
A great maxi dress should feel just as at home wandering around a market on holiday as it does sitting at a wedding reception. It should work with sandals, trainers or wedges. It should feel effortless to wear and comfortable enough that you don't spend the entire day thinking about it.
Most importantly, it should make you feel good.
Because if you don't feel good in it, you won't wear it.
The Best Maxi Dress For Summer Weddings
Wedding guest dressing can be surprisingly stressful.
You want to look put together, make an effort and feel special, but you also know you're probably going to be wearing the outfit for ten or twelve hours. You'll be sitting, standing, eating, dancing and hopefully enjoying yourself.
The best wedding guest dresses are the ones that allow you to do all of that comfortably.
For me, that means lightweight fabrics, a relaxed silhouette and a print or colour that feels joyful without trying too hard. A floral maxi dress is always a safe bet because it feels occasion-worthy whilst still being wearable long after the wedding is over.
Add a pair of wedges, some jewellery and a great bag and you're done.
The Best Maxi Dress For Holidays
When it comes to holidays, I want clothes that work hard.
Nobody wants to fill an entire suitcase with outfits you'll only wear once.
The best holiday dresses are the ones that can take you from breakfast to sightseeing, from beach walks to dinner and from daytime exploring to evening drinks without needing much thought.
A floaty maxi dress is one of the easiest things to pack because it instantly looks like you've made an effort, even when you've spent approximately thirty seconds getting ready.
Throw it on with sandals during the day, add a cardigan when the temperature drops and you're sorted.
The Best Maxi Dress For Summer Weekends
Summer weekends are probably where a great maxi dress really comes into its own.
The BBQs.
The pub gardens.
The farmers' markets.
The family lunches.
The last-minute plans that seem to appear whenever the weather forecast promises sunshine.
These are the moments where comfort becomes just as important as style.
You want something that feels relaxed and easy to wear, but you still want to feel like you've made an effort.
That's where a great maxi dress wins every time.
It's one piece, one decision and one less thing to think about.
Why I Ended Up Designing My Own
After years of searching, I realised I was looking for a very specific type of dress.
I wanted something colourful and feminine, but not overly fussy. I wanted a dress that felt relaxed without being shapeless and comfortable without feeling boring. I wanted something I could genuinely wear to a wedding, a holiday, a garden party, a festival or simply out for lunch and feel equally comfortable in every setting.
I also wanted pockets.
Because I feel very strongly that every good dress should have pockets.
The more I searched, the more I realised I couldn't quite find what I was looking for.
So I designed it.
The Maisie Maxi Dress was created to be exactly the kind of dress I spent years searching for.
Made in small batches right here in Britain, Maisie combines a relaxed silhouette with beautiful floral fabrics, practical pockets and an easy-to-wear shape that works for so many different occasions.
It's the dress I'd wear to a summer wedding.
The dress I'd pack first for a holiday.
The dress I'd throw on for a BBQ, a garden party, a day at the races or a weekend spent enjoying the sunshine.
Made from a lightweight cotton blend fabric and available in two limited-edition floral colourways, Maisie was designed to be versatile, comfortable and joyful to wear.
Not a dress you'll wear once.
A dress you'll reach for all summer long.
If you're looking for a floral maxi dress that works for weddings, holidays and summer weekends, discover the Maisie Maxi Dress.

FAQs
What is the best maxi dress for a summer wedding?
A floral maxi dress in a breathable fabric is one of the most versatile options for summer weddings. Look for styles that feel comfortable enough to wear all day whilst still feeling special for the occasion.
Can you wear a maxi dress on holiday?
Absolutely. Maxi dresses are one of the easiest holiday pieces to pack because they work for sightseeing, lunches, evenings out and everything in between.
Are maxi dresses flattering?
The most flattering maxi dress is the one you feel comfortable and confident wearing. Relaxed silhouettes and floaty fabrics tend to work particularly well because they move with the body rather than feeling restrictive.
Is the Maisie Maxi Dress made in Britain?
Yes. Every Maisie Maxi Dress is made in Britain in small batches using carefully sourced fabrics, including limited-edition deadstock materials.
If you've followed Cara & The Sky for a while, you'll probably know that being British made has always been a huge part of the brand.
My knitwear has been made in Britain since day one and, when I decided to launch my first dress collection, there was never really any question about where I wanted the dresses to be made.
They had to be made here too.
Not because it's the easiest option.
In fact, if I'm completely honest, it's probably the exact opposite.
Finding a British manufacturer for my dresses took far longer than I ever expected. There were countless emails, phone calls, meetings, samples and setbacks. At times it felt like every time I thought I'd found the right partner, another challenge appeared.
But I knew from the start that it was something I wasn't willing to compromise on.
Because for me, being British made isn't just a label sewn into a garment.
It's about quality, craftsmanship, supporting skilled makers and creating clothes that are designed to be loved for years rather than worn a handful of times and forgotten about.
What Does British Made Actually Mean?
The phrase "British made" gets used a lot in fashion, but it's not always obvious what it means.
For me, it means that the garments are manufactured here in the UK by skilled people who are paid fairly for their work. It means being able to visit the factory, build relationships with the people making the collection and be involved in the process from start to finish.
When something is being made on the other side of the world, that level of involvement simply isn't possible.
With British manufacturing, if there is a problem, a fit issue or a detail that needs tweaking, I can work directly with the people creating the garments. That level of collaboration is invaluable, particularly when you're launching something as personal as your first dress collection.
Why British-Made Dresses Often Feel Different
One of the things I've noticed throughout my career in fashion is that the best pieces tend to be the ones that have had time, care and attention poured into them.
That's one of the reasons I love British manufacturing.
The factories I've worked with aren't producing hundreds of thousands of garments at a time. They're often producing smaller runs, working closely with brands and paying attention to the details that can sometimes get lost in large-scale production.
That doesn't mean every British-made garment is automatically better, but it does mean there's often a level of craftsmanship and care that is difficult to achieve at enormous scale.
When you're investing in a dress you hope to wear for years, those details matter.
The Challenges Of Making Dresses In The UK
I'm not going to pretend it was easy.
There is a reason so many brands manufacture overseas.
It's often cheaper. There are more factories. There are more options.
The reality is that UK manufacturing has shrunk dramatically over the last few decades and finding the right partner can be incredibly difficult, particularly if you're a small independent brand wanting to produce relatively small quantities.
For the dress collection, I spent nearly two years sourcing fabrics, refining designs and searching for the right manufacturing partner. There were moments when I genuinely wondered whether we'd ever get the collection over the finish line.
But looking back now, I'm glad I didn't take the easier route.
Because these dresses feel exactly how I wanted them to feel.
Why Small Batch Production Matters
Another reason British manufacturing was important to me is that it allows me to produce in much smaller quantities.
Rather than creating hundreds of dresses and hoping they sell, I can create limited runs and focus on quality over quantity.
For the launch of the collection, only 25 pieces of each style were produced.
Some of the fabrics are genuine deadstock fabrics, meaning once they're gone, they're gone forever. One of the fabrics had already sold out at the supplier before production even began, which means there will never be another run made in exactly the same fabric.
I love that.
It makes every piece feel a little bit more special.
The British-Made Dresses I Couldn't Find
The funny thing is that this whole collection started because I couldn't find the dresses I wanted to wear myself.
I was looking for colourful, comfortable dresses that felt feminine without being restrictive. Dresses with personality. Dresses that worked for real life. Dresses I could wear on holiday, to a wedding, to a BBQ or simply on a sunny day when I wanted to feel good.
And I wanted them to be made properly.
Not rushed.
Not trend driven.
Not designed to be worn twice and forgotten.
So I created them.
The result is the Maisie Maxi Dress and Ruby Mini Dress. Two dresses designed in Hertfordshire, made in Britain and produced in small batches using a mix of deadstock and specially sourced fabrics.
They're colourful, relaxed, practical and designed to bring a little bit of joy back into getting dressed.
Which, when you strip everything else away, is really what Cara & The Sky has always been about.
Why Supporting British-Made Fashion Matters
Every time you choose a British-made garment, you're supporting skills, craftsmanship and an industry that has become increasingly rare.
You're supporting the machinists, pattern cutters, garment technologists and factory teams who keep those skills alive.
You're helping independent brands continue to manufacture locally.
And you're investing in clothes that have been made with care.
Of course, British-made fashion isn't the only way to shop more thoughtfully, and it won't be the right choice for everyone. But if you're looking for pieces with a story behind them, produced in small quantities and created by people who genuinely care about what they're making, it's something worth considering.
When I launched my first dress collection, I wanted to create the dresses I'd spent years searching for. Colourful, comfortable, relaxed dresses that worked for real life and were made properly here in Britain.
The result is a small collection of limited-edition dresses designed to be worn on holidays, to weddings, at garden parties, festivals, pub lunches and everywhere in between.
If you're looking for a British-made dress with personality, discover the collection below.
A relaxed floral maxi dress with pockets, designed for weddings, holidays, festivals and everyday summer adventures.
A playful mini dress with an oversized collar, pockets and a relaxed babydoll shape, perfect for BBQs, picnics, pub gardens and sunny weekends.
Both styles are made in Britain in small batches using carefully sourced fabrics and are available in very limited quantities.

FAQs
Are British-made dresses better quality?
Not automatically, but British manufacturing often allows for greater oversight, smaller production runs and closer relationships between brands and manufacturers, which can lead to higher quality garments.
Why are British-made dresses more expensive?
Labour, manufacturing and operating costs in the UK are generally higher than in many overseas manufacturing countries. However, this often supports fair wages, skilled craftsmanship and smaller-scale production.
Are Cara & The Sky dresses made in Britain?
Yes. Both the Maisie Maxi Dress and Ruby Mini Dress are designed by Cara & The Sky and manufactured in the UK in small batches.
What are the benefits of buying British-made clothing?
Supporting UK manufacturing helps preserve valuable skills, supports local jobs and often allows brands to produce smaller, more thoughtful collections with greater control over quality.
After years of searching, ordering, returning and feeling slightly disappointed, I realised I was looking for a very specific type of dress.
I wanted a floral maxi dress that felt relaxed rather than restrictive. Something colourful and feminine, but easy enough to wear on an ordinary Tuesday. I wanted a dress I could pack for a holiday, wear to a summer wedding, take to the races, throw on for a garden party or wear out for lunch with friends without having to think twice about it.
I wanted beautiful fabric, a flattering shape, pockets and enough personality that it didn't look like every other dress on the high street.
Most importantly, I wanted a dress that made me feel good every time I put it on.
When I couldn't find it, I designed it.
That's exactly why I created the Maisie Maxi Dress.
Made in small batches right here in Britain using a mix of deadstock and specially sourced fabrics, Maisie was designed to be the dress you reach for all summer long. The relaxed silhouette makes it effortless to wear, whilst the floral prints, thoughtful details and practical pockets make it feel truly special.
It's the dress I pack first for holidays. The dress I'd wear to a wedding. The dress I'd throw on for a BBQ, a festival, a garden party or simply a sunny day when I want to feel a little more like myself.
In short, it's the summer maxi dress I'd spent years searching for.
If you're looking for a colourful floral maxi dress that combines comfort, personality and effortless style, discover the Maisie Maxi Dress.

The funny thing is, I never set out to design dresses.
When I launched Cara & The Sky, knitwear was always the plan. Colourful, joyful knitwear that made getting dressed feel fun again. Dresses weren't even on the roadmap until much later. In fact, if everything had gone to plan, they probably would have launched years ago. But somewhere between building a brand and having two babies, life had other ideas.
The more I searched for dresses for myself, though, the more I realised there was a huge gap in the market. I wasn't looking for anything particularly groundbreaking. I simply wanted dresses that felt like they had been designed for women living real lives.
Women whose bodies have changed.
Women who want comfort but don't want to sacrifice style.
Women who still love colour, prints and personality, but also want to feel comfortable enough to spend an entire day in what they're wearing.
I wanted dresses that felt relaxed without feeling shapeless. Dresses that skimmed rather than clung. Dresses that looked just as good with Birkenstocks on a school run as they did dressed up for a wedding, holiday, garden party or day at the races.
I wanted dresses with pockets. Dresses made from beautiful fabrics. Dresses that felt a little bit different from everything else on the high street.
And because I couldn't find them, I decided to create them.
After nearly two years of development, countless samples, fabric sourcing trips, fit tweaks and manufacturer meetings, the collection that had been living in my head for so long finally became a reality.
Just like my knitwear, every dress is made in small batches right here in the UK. Finding the right British manufacturing partner took far longer than I ever imagined, but it was something I wasn't willing to compromise on. Supporting UK manufacturing has always been incredibly important to me, and being able to work closely with the people making the collection means every detail gets the attention it deserves.
The collection is made using a mix of deadstock and specially sourced fabrics, which means quantities are genuinely limited. In some cases, once a fabric is gone, it's gone forever.
The Maisie Maxi Dress was designed for those moments when you want to feel effortlessly put together. Whether you're heading to a summer wedding, wandering around a market on holiday, packing for a festival weekend or meeting friends for lunch, it's the kind of dress you can throw on and instantly feel good in.
The Ruby Mini Dress has that playful, carefree feel that I always find myself reaching for in summer. With its oversized collar, relaxed babydoll shape and pockets, it's the dress I imagine wearing for pub gardens, picnics, BBQs and all those spontaneous summer plans that seem to appear when the sun finally comes out.
Both styles were created with exactly the same goal in mind: to help women feel like themselves again.
Not a younger version of themselves.
Not a smaller version of themselves.
Not the person they were before children, before life got busy or before their body changed.
Just themselves.
Because I genuinely believe that getting dressed should feel joyful. It should feel easy. It should feel like an act of self-expression rather than something that fills you with dread every morning.
So if you've spent the last few years feeling disconnected from your wardrobe, frustrated by changing room mirrors or wondering where all the dresses for women like us actually are, I'd love you to take a look at the collection.
These are the dresses I spent years searching for.
And in the end, they're the dresses I created.

All made in Britain. All produced in small batches. All designed to help you fall back in love with getting dressed.
Every year, usually around the first properly warm day of the year, I find myself searching for exactly the same thing.
The best summer dress.
Not a dress for one specific occasion. Not a dress that's trending for five minutes before disappearing off the face of the earth. Not a dress that looks amazing in a perfectly styled Instagram photo but spends the rest of its life hanging unworn in the wardrobe.
I mean the dress. The one you reach for over and over again because it somehow works for almost everything summer throws at you.
The dress that gets packed first into your holiday suitcase. The one you throw on for a BBQ when the weather suddenly decides to cooperate. The one you wear to a wedding, a garden party, a festival or a pub lunch and feel equally comfortable in every situation.
As someone who has spent over a decade working in fashion, you'd think I'd have this figured out by now.
The reality is that finding the best summer dress is surprisingly difficult.
There are thousands of dresses out there. Every retailer launches a huge summer collection. Every magazine tells us which styles are supposedly essential for the season. Yet year after year I found myself ordering dresses, returning dresses and wondering why something that should have been so simple felt so hard to get right.
The problem wasn't that there weren't enough options.
The problem was that none of them seemed to tick all the boxes.
What Actually Makes A Great Summer Dress?
The older I get, the more I realise that the best clothes aren't necessarily the most fashionable ones.
They're the ones that make life easier.
They're the pieces you don't have to think about. The pieces that make getting dressed feel effortless. The pieces that work so hard in your wardrobe that you wonder how you ever managed without them.
For me, the best summer dress needs to be comfortable enough that I can wear it all day without constantly adjusting it. It needs to feel relaxed and easy to wear, but still special enough that I feel good when I put it on. It needs to be versatile enough to work across multiple occasions because, let's be honest, most of us don't have the budget or the wardrobe space for a different dress for every event in our diary.
It also needs personality.
Life is too short for boring dresses.
I want colour. I want beautiful fabrics. I want interesting details. I want something that makes me smile when I open my wardrobe.
And I want pockets.
Because every good dress should have pockets.
Why Finding The Best Summer Dress Is Harder Than It Should Be
I think one of the biggest problems is that so many dresses seem to sit at opposite ends of the spectrum.
They're either incredibly casual and feel a bit forgettable, or they're so occasion-focused that you can only really wear them once or twice a year.
I found myself constantly searching for something in the middle.
A dress that felt special without being fussy.
A dress that felt feminine without being restrictive.
A dress that felt comfortable without looking like I'd completely given up.
I wanted something I could wear on holiday, to a wedding, to a BBQ, to the races, to a picnic or simply out for lunch with friends.
The kind of dress that makes getting dressed easier rather than harder.
The kind of dress that earns its place in your wardrobe.
And surprisingly, that proved much harder to find than I expected.
The Summer Dresses I Was Looking For
The more I searched, the more I realised I had a very clear picture in my head of what I wanted.
Actually, that's not entirely true.
What I realised was that I wasn't looking for one dress.
I was looking for two.
Some days I wanted a floaty floral maxi dress that felt effortless and romantic. The kind of dress that works beautifully for weddings, holidays, garden parties and those occasions where you want to feel a little bit more dressed up without sacrificing comfort.
Other days I wanted something more playful. A dress I could throw on for a pub lunch, a picnic, a festival, a family day out or a spontaneous summer plan without having to think twice about it.
What both dresses had in common was how I wanted them to make me feel.
Comfortable.
Confident.
Like myself.
I wanted beautiful fabrics, practical details, relaxed silhouettes and enough personality that they didn't look like every other dress on the high street.
Most importantly, I wanted dresses I'd still be reaching for years from now.
When I couldn't find them, I decided to create them.
It took nearly two years to get here.
There were countless samples, fabric sourcing meetings, factory visits, design tweaks and moments where I wondered if the collection would ever actually launch.
But eventually the dresses I'd been imagining for so long became a reality.
Maisie is my dream summer maxi dress.
Made from beautiful floral fabrics and designed with a relaxed silhouette and practical pockets, it's the dress I reach for when I want to feel effortlessly put together. It's perfect for weddings, holidays, garden parties, festivals, the races and all those occasions where you want to feel special without feeling overdressed.
It's comfortable, colourful and easy to wear, which is exactly what I wanted from a summer maxi dress.
Ruby is Maisie's slightly more playful little sister.
With its oversized collar, relaxed babydoll shape and easy-to-wear mini length, Ruby was designed for the everyday moments that make summer so enjoyable. Think pub gardens, BBQs, picnics, festivals, sunny weekends and all those spontaneous plans that seem to appear the minute the sun comes out.
It's fun, effortless and incredibly easy to wear.
Like Maisie, it has pockets because I refuse to make a dress without them.
And like Maisie, it's made in Britain in small batches using carefully sourced fabrics.
Why British-Made Matters To Me
Just like my knitwear, it was incredibly important to me that these dresses were made in Britain.
Finding the right manufacturing partner wasn't easy and, if I'm honest, it would have been far simpler to take production overseas. But supporting British manufacturing has always been a core part of Cara & The Sky and I wanted the dresses to reflect those same values.
Producing in small batches allows me to work closely with the factory, focus on quality and create limited runs using beautiful fabrics, including genuine deadstock materials that might otherwise go to waste.
It's a slower approach, but it's one I believe in.
Which Summer Dress Is Right For You?
If you're looking for a dress for weddings, holidays, garden parties, the races or summer celebrations, Maisie is probably your girl.
If you're looking for a dress for pub gardens, picnics, BBQs, festivals and everyday summer adventures, Ruby might be the one.
And if you're anything like me, you'll probably find room for both.
Because whilst I set out to find the best summer dress, what I actually discovered was that summer is better when you have a few dresses you genuinely love wearing.
