The Best Maxi Dress For Weddings, Holidays And Summer Weekends
If there is one item in my wardrobe that earns its keep every single summer, it's a great maxi dress.
Not the kind that looks lovely on a hanger but never quite works in real life. I mean the dress you find yourself reaching for over and over again because somehow it works for everything. The one that gets packed first into your suitcase, saves you when a wedding invitation lands unexpectedly in your inbox and becomes your go-to outfit for everything from BBQs and garden parties to spontaneous pub lunches in the sunshine.
In theory, finding the perfect summer maxi dress should be easy.
There are thousands of them.
Yet every year I seem to find myself searching for the same thing. A dress that feels comfortable enough for everyday wear, special enough for occasions, and versatile enough that I don't need a completely different outfit for every event in my calendar.
Because whilst I love clothes, I don't particularly love overcomplicating getting dressed.
The best pieces in any wardrobe are the ones that make life easier.
What Makes A Maxi Dress Truly Versatile?
I think we've all bought dresses for a specific occasion before.
The wedding guest dress that never gets worn again.
The holiday dress that somehow only works on holiday.
The occasion dress that feels too dressy for absolutely everything else.
The problem is that those pieces often end up spending most of their lives hanging in the wardrobe.
The dresses that become favourites are usually the ones that work harder than that.
A great maxi dress should feel just as at home wandering around a market on holiday as it does sitting at a wedding reception. It should work with sandals, trainers or wedges. It should feel effortless to wear and comfortable enough that you don't spend the entire day thinking about it.
Most importantly, it should make you feel good.
Because if you don't feel good in it, you won't wear it.
The Best Maxi Dress For Summer Weddings
Wedding guest dressing can be surprisingly stressful.
You want to look put together, make an effort and feel special, but you also know you're probably going to be wearing the outfit for ten or twelve hours. You'll be sitting, standing, eating, dancing and hopefully enjoying yourself.
The best wedding guest dresses are the ones that allow you to do all of that comfortably.
For me, that means lightweight fabrics, a relaxed silhouette and a print or colour that feels joyful without trying too hard. A floral maxi dress is always a safe bet because it feels occasion-worthy whilst still being wearable long after the wedding is over.
Add a pair of wedges, some jewellery and a great bag and you're done.
The Best Maxi Dress For Holidays
When it comes to holidays, I want clothes that work hard.
Nobody wants to fill an entire suitcase with outfits you'll only wear once.
The best holiday dresses are the ones that can take you from breakfast to sightseeing, from beach walks to dinner and from daytime exploring to evening drinks without needing much thought.
A floaty maxi dress is one of the easiest things to pack because it instantly looks like you've made an effort, even when you've spent approximately thirty seconds getting ready.
Throw it on with sandals during the day, add a cardigan when the temperature drops and you're sorted.
The Best Maxi Dress For Summer Weekends
Summer weekends are probably where a great maxi dress really comes into its own.
The BBQs.
The pub gardens.
The farmers' markets.
The family lunches.
The last-minute plans that seem to appear whenever the weather forecast promises sunshine.
These are the moments where comfort becomes just as important as style.
You want something that feels relaxed and easy to wear, but you still want to feel like you've made an effort.
That's where a great maxi dress wins every time.
It's one piece, one decision and one less thing to think about.
Why I Ended Up Designing My Own
After years of searching, I realised I was looking for a very specific type of dress.
I wanted something colourful and feminine, but not overly fussy. I wanted a dress that felt relaxed without being shapeless and comfortable without feeling boring. I wanted something I could genuinely wear to a wedding, a holiday, a garden party, a festival or simply out for lunch and feel equally comfortable in every setting.
I also wanted pockets.
Because I feel very strongly that every good dress should have pockets.
The more I searched, the more I realised I couldn't quite find what I was looking for.
So I designed it.
The Maisie Maxi Dress was created to be exactly the kind of dress I spent years searching for.
Made in small batches right here in Britain, Maisie combines a relaxed silhouette with beautiful floral fabrics, practical pockets and an easy-to-wear shape that works for so many different occasions.

Made from a lightweight cotton blend fabric and available in two limited-edition floral colourways, Maisie was designed to be versatile, comfortable and joyful to wear.
Not a dress you'll wear once.

Absolutely. Maxi dresses are one of the easiest holiday pieces to pack because they work for sightseeing, lunches, evenings out and everything in between.
